Self-Care for Moms: 20 Things You Can Do in 5 Minutes or Less

Category: Self Care  Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes

Let’s get real about self-care as a mom. Those Instagram posts about bubble baths and yoga retreats? Not happening when you have a toddler hanging on your leg.

But here’s what I’ve learned: self-care doesn’t have to be time-consuming or expensive. Sometimes it’s just 5 minutes of doing something that reminds you that you’re a person, not just “mom.”

These micro-moments of self-care have kept me sane through the hardest days of motherhood.

Why 5-Minute Self-Care Matters

As moms, we’re constantly giving. We give our time, energy, patience, and love – often until we’re completely depleted. Those tiny moments of filling our own cup matter more than we realize.

Five minutes can:

Reset your mood and energy

Remind you of your identity beyond motherhood

Provide a mental break from constant demands

Help you show up better for your family

Quick Mood Boosters (1-2 minutes)

1. Take 10 deep breaths

Seriously, just breathe. In for 4, hold for 4, out for 6. It activates your parasympathetic nervous system and actually calms you down.

2. Step outside barefoot

Feel grass or concrete under your feet. The grounding effect is instant and surprisingly powerful.

3. Splash cold water on your face

An instant refresh that works better than coffee sometimes.

This jade roller feels amazing on tired eyes and only takes two minutes to use during my morning routine.

4. Listen to one favorite song

Put in headphones if you need to. Music is instant mood therapy.

5. Smell something you love

Essential oils, candles, or even opening a bag of coffee beans. Scent triggers immediate emotional responses.

These essential oil rollers are perfect for quick aromatherapy - I keep lavender in my purse for stressful moments.

Body Care Quick Fixes (3-5 minutes)

6. Apply hand cream mindfully

Take your time, massage your hands, appreciate what they do all day. This hand cream has been my go-to for years - it absorbs quickly and actually keeps my hands soft despite constant hand washing.

7. Do gentle neck rolls

Release the tension from carrying car seats, holding babies, and stress.

8. Paint your nails one color

Just one coat of a favorite shade. It’s a tiny act of beauty for yourself.

9. Dry brush your skin

Feels amazing and improves circulation. Keep a dry brush in your bathroom.

These shower steamers turn my regular shower into a spa experience - eucalyptus is my favorite for energy!

10. Face mask from the kitchen

Honey, yogurt, or even just a cold washcloth can refresh your skin quickly.

Mental Reset Activities (5 minutes)

11. Write in a journal

Stream of consciousness , gratitude list, or just venting – get thoughts out of your head.

This structured journal makes it easy to write down three things I'm grateful for, even on the hardest days.

12. Read one article or blog post

Something for YOU, not about parenting or household management.

13. Look at photos that make you happy

Scroll through vacation pics or baby photos that make you smile.

14. Call someone who makes you laugh

Even a 3-minute conversation can shift your entire day.

15. Practice positive self-talk

Look in the mirror and say one kind thing about yourself. It feels silly but works.

Physical Movement (5 minutes)

16. Dance in your kitchen

Put on music and move your body. Kids will probably join in, making it even more fun.

17. Do simple stretches

Touch your toes, reach overhead, twist your spine. Your body will thank you.

18. Walk to the mailbox slowly

Instead of rushing, walk mindfully and notice your surroundings.

19. Do wall push-ups

Quick strength movement that makes you feel accomplished.

20. Yoga poses

Child’s pose, downward dog, or simple sun salutations.

Making It Happen in Real Life

Morning options: Before kids wake up or while they eat breakfast

Naptime: First 5 minutes while they’re settling down

Evening: After kids are in bed but before you collapse

Anytime: In the bathroom (lock the door!), in your car, or outside

Creating Your Self-Care Menu

Make a list of your favorite 5-minute activities and keep it visible. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to think – just pick something from your menu.

My current favorites:

Hot tea in my favorite mug

Looking at my plants on the porch

Putting on lip balm and perfume

Listening to a podcast while folding laundry

Taking a photo of something beautiful

This compact journal fits in my diaper bag and is perfect for quick thoughts, gratitude lists, or mom brain reminders!

When 5 Minutes Feels Impossible

Some days, even 5 minutes feels like too much. On those days, try:

Three deep breaths

Drinking water from a nice glass

Looking out a window

Putting on chapstick

Saying “I’m doing my best” out loud

The Guilt Factor

Can we talk about mom guilt around self-care? That voice that says “you should be playing with the kids” or “you should be cleaning”?

Here’s the truth: taking care of yourself IS taking care of your family. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Self-care isn’t selfish – it’s necessary.

Building the Habit

Start with just one 5-minute self-care activity per day. Pick the same time each day to make it a routine:

With your morning coffee

During afternoon quiet time

Right after kids go to bed

Self-Care on Hard Days

The days you feel like you need self-care the most are often when it feels most impossible. Keep an emergency self-care kit:

Favorite tea or coffee

Essential oil roller

Playlist of favorite songs

List of people you can text

Chocolate (obviously)

What Self-Care ISN’T

Another item on your to-do list

Something that requires perfect conditions

Only bubble baths and spa days

Selfish or indulgent

Something you have to earn

The Ripple Effect

When you take even small moments for yourself, everyone benefits:

Kids see you modeling self-respect

You have more patience and energy

You remember who you are outside of motherhood

You show up as a better version of yourself

Start Today

Pick one thing from this list and try it today. Just one. See how it feels to give yourself 5 minutes of care.

You deserve it, mama. You don’t have to earn it, justify it, or feel guilty about it.
